L'elisir d'amore is a fun, pop opera, but it also conceals a political message.
It tells the story of unrequited love and the journey of two young people towards liberation from social constraints.
The action takes place in the present day, in a city park.
A diverse and exuberant group of people jostle for space in their desperate search for entertainment and a special place in the world.
The choral nature of the opera is a constant feature: every event or action of the protagonists is observed, commented on and participated in by the chorus, with irony and cynicism.
The ‘La piAdina’ kiosk is at the centre of park life. Nemorino and Giannetta are employees of Adina, the park's diva, a seductive young woman who attracts attention and envy.
In the discomfort of managing common spaces, conflict seems the only solution for an entire community, in a comic escalation of petty oppression.
The choir joins forces against the loser of the moment, or abandons itself to the entrancing effect of the magic elixir, a serotonin stimulator (smart drug).
No one wants to show their true self, everyone seeks approval, prestige and fun.
In this sense, I have tried to highlight everyday cruelty and vulnerability.
